Gross sales, net sales and your payout: what each number means

Gross sales is what you sold, net sales is that minus refunds, and your payout is what's left after fees.

Updated

The Finance page uses one name for each number, and each name always means the same thing. Read top to bottom, it goes from what you sold to what reaches your account.

The numbers, in order

LabelWhat it is
Gross salesEverything you sold before refunds: tickets, tables, add-ons, sponsor fees and paid upgrades, after discounts. Leaves out sales tax and any fees your buyers paid.
RefundsWhat you've given back.
Net salesGross sales minus refunds.
Processing (est.)Stripe's fee on card sales where you covered the fees. It's an estimate; the exact amount is in your Stripe dashboard.
CardMap feeCardMap's 2.5% on sales where you covered the fees. It comes back to you when a sale is refunded.
Your payout (est.)Net sales minus processing and the CardMap fee. This is what you take home.

When your buyers cover the fees, they pay Processing and the CardMap fee on top of your price. Those sales show no fee lines, and your payout matches your net sales.

Example: 200 tickets at $10.00 each, paid by card
LineYou cover the feesBuyers cover the fees
Buyer pays$2,000.00$2,174.00
Stripe processing (est.)−$118.00Paid by buyer
CardMap fee (2.5%)−$50.00Paid by buyer
Your payout (est.)$1,832.00$2,000.00

Stripe's standard rate in the US and Canada is 2.9% + 30¢ per card payment. Premium and international cards can cost a little more. Sales tax is not included here.

Why some figures say "est."

Stripe's fee depends on the card. Premium and international cards cost slightly more than the standard 2.9% + 30¢. CardMap estimates processing at the standard rate. Stripe's own records are exact, and your Stripe dashboard has them line by line.

Numbers that aren't part of your sales

  • Sales tax collected is shown on its own line. It's paid out to you so you can remit it. CardMap doesn't file it for you.
  • Received in your organization's ledger is every charge that came in, including tax and buyer-paid fees. It's useful for matching against your bank, but it isn't your sales.
  • Cash at the door and invoices marked paid offline count toward your sales, but never went through Stripe, so they carry no fees.

Exporting

Every figure on the Finance page can be downloaded as a CSV with the same column names, for your bookkeeper or spreadsheet.
